Specifying sustainable protection

SmithGroup architects designed the University of California–Davis Teaching and Learning Complex’s new building with sustainability top of mind.

With nearly 200,000 square feet of Rockfon Alaska® acoustic stone wool ceiling tiles — made from primarly natural basalt rock — the four-story education facility adheres to the UC Davis Campus Design Guide and the University of California Seismic Safety Policy.

Complementing the TLC’s modern appearance, the ceiling tiles feature an elegant, smooth white surface. This helps reduce glare on computer screens and other educational devices.

As clients and architects focus on the sustainable performance of building, both in use and also in construction the Global Warming Potential (GWP), or the Embodied Carbon of construction products, is coming more into focus - Rockfon stone wool tiles perform. Our GWP figures per product are easily accessible and are available through the Embodied Carbon In Construction Calculator, or EC3 tool, so you can compare stone wool versus other materials and the benchmark set by the Carbon Leadership Forum.
